A Japanese man wrongly convicted of murder, who holds the record for the world's longest-serving death row inmate, has been awarded 217 million yen ($1.8 million) in compensation. Last year, the 89-year-old Japanese man was convicted of a murder he did not commit. Former boxer Iwao Hakamada spent four decades in prison for a murder he did not commit. Last year, Hakamada was convicted of the murder of four people in 1966, after a relentless campaign by his sister and others. The compensation represents 12,500 yen ($100) for each day of the more than four decades Hakamada spent behind bars, most of which was on death row with each day potentially being his last. The Shizuoka District Court, in a ruling dated Monday (3/24) as reported by a court spokesperson, ruled that "the plaintiff will be awarded 217,362,500 yen." The same court ruled in September last year that Hakamada was not guilty in a retrial of his case, and that police had destroyed evidence in the case.[1]
Hakamada, the court said at the time, had been subjected to "inhumane interrogation intended to extract a 'confession' from him that he later retracted." The final amount of compensation for Hakamada, according to local media reports, was a record. But Hakamada's legal team said the amount was not enough to make up for the pain he endured during his imprisonment. Hakamada is only the fifth death row inmate to be retried in Japan's post-war history. The four previous cases also resulted in acquittals.[2] And if you have any legal issue in Indonesia territory, contact us for business inquiry, feel free in 24 hour, we will be glad to assist you.
