The Islamic belief that Ramadan is the month of the Koran seems to have inspired police officers in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province. The Central Lombok Regency Police Department (Polres) has begun implementing new methods of enforcing traffic laws. Central Lombok Police Chief AKBP Iwan Hidayat said he termed the method a "syariah ticket". He initiated this with the aim of providing a more humane approach to traffic violators on the road.[1]

Head of the Central Lombok Police Traffic Unit, AKP Puteh Rinaldi, explained that sharia tickets would be given to traffic violators under certain conditions. For those who claim to be able to recite the Koran properly and correctly, they will not be subject to ordinary fines. The violators were actually challenged to read verses from the Islamic holy book. "If violators can read or recite the Koran properly and correctly, then they will not be ticketed".
